Juanita Rubio was a humble woman born Juanita Coss in the region of San Lorenzo/Yabucoa, Puerto Rico on December 27 1937.
She was rendered blind as a toddler and spent almost all of her childhood away at a school for the blind visiting her home and family on weekends and holidays. She had fond memories of her childhood though she understood how poor her family was and how hard her parents had to work their farm.
As a teenager, she was brought to the states to reunite with her family who had moved here. Eventually she had 6 children of her own. Sadly she was separated by circumstance from her first four and later went on to have 2 more children, a son and a daughter and a successful and loving marriage with her dear husband Jose. She did however suffer the tragic loss of this son, whose name was Jose when he was just 27 years old.
Juanita loved the outdoors and could be found chatting with birds while hanging laundry, puttering around while tending her garden or just swinging in her hammock listening to the radio. She enjoyed many holidays around the United States and the world during her lifetime.
She also loved to walk and very much enjoyed the freedom and safety from traffic and trip hazards provided by the Pinellas Trail near her home in Palm Harbor, FL. She walked six days a week with her husband until she became ill.
She passed away April 6 2018 and is survived by her siblings, 5 remaining children, numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and her dear husband Jose whom she was married to for 51 years.
Her humble spirit, kindness, joy of life and love will be missed. May God Bless her and she rest in Peace.
