Obituary for Jens Runy
Jens Runy, age 75, of Oldsmar passed away March 2, 2018.
Born in Germany in 1943, he and his family immigrated to the United States when Jens was a child and settled in Vermont, running the Maple Leaf Motel.
He served in the Air Force as a radar technician in places such as Goose Bay, Labrador in Canada, where he met his wife Linda Wightman; Finland, Minnesota; Massachusetts; Alaska; and Florida. He retired from the Air Force after more than 20 years of service. A giving person by nature, Jens also worked as a maintenance man for the Children’s Home.
Eventually, the family settled in Oldsmar, FL, where they have lived for the last 36 years. He spent his time woodworking, treating many family members, friends, and others to his unique and beautiful creations. He also learned to cook, making recipes his own; his love of cooking surpassed the average household chef. His meals were often anticipated and will be forever missed.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Linda Wightman Runy, of Oldsmar; daughter, Jennifer Runy, of Pinellas Park; son, Michael Runy, and his wife Kate, of Cary, N.C.; brother John Runy, and his wife Carol, of Columbia, S.C.; sister-in-law Rhoda Costello Wightman, of Clearwater; sister-in-law Marilyn Wightman, of Cotuit, MA; and numerous nieces and nephews. His dog, Buster, and “granddog” Rocco, who were both greatly loved and spoiled by Jens, also survive him.
A family-only service will be held at Curlew Hills Memorial Gardens on Saturday, March 10, 2018 with visitation at the family’s home between 2-5 p.m. following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the DAV – Disabled American Veterans (https://www.dav.org/methods-to-donate/) or the Salvation Army.
