Obituary for Barbara Frost Bates
Barbara Frost Bates, 91, passed peacefully from this life on October 8, 2017 surrounded by her four children.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Barb, as her friends called her, was the daughter of Ernest Goodell Frost and Alma Edwards Frost of Oberlin, Ohio. She was born and grew up in Dayton, Ohio graduating from Fairview High School and attended Otterbein College for three and a half years majoring in Psychology. Barbara's youthful beauty afforded her modeling opportunities during her teens leading to being crowned “May Queen” of her college in 1947. Later that year she married Jack, a dashing junior naval officer who enjoyed a long and interesting career as a pilot, early day hurricane hunter, and intelligence officer. After living in many locations throughout the United States, Morocco, and traveling throughout Europe, they returned to the Washington, DC area before retiring to Clearwater, Fl in 1970.
Barbara loved her many lifelong friendships, rooting for Ohio State football, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Tampa Bay Rays. She was as a skilled amateur golfer who scored a hole-in-one at the age of seventy-eight and played a weekly 9 holes with friends into her late ‘80’s. The last month that she played golf, at the age of ninety, she came in first twice against eight other putters on the green.
Her other hobbies included oil painting, caning chairs, genealogy and needlework. She did daily crossword puzzles, cryptoquotes, and enjoyed reading.
Barbara enjoined caring for her family, was kind to everyone she met and was known for her smile and twinkling eyes.
She is survived by her four children:

Her seven grandchildren:
• Eric, Mike, Sara, and Matt Johnson; Justin Bates, Micah Holmbeck, Kashi Newell
Her great grandchildren:
• Brienna Johnson, Brian Johnson
Her older brother John E. Frost (Audrey)
Her nieces and nephews:
• Marcia Frost. Lynn Goodell, Jim Frost, Mark Bates
• and lifelong sorority sister friends Norma Webster Frost and Eileen Hill Smart
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 63 years Cmdr. Edwin Jack Bates (USN), son-in-law Brian Phillip Johnson and grandson Christopher Landis Bates.
